MARGARET EKPO

Margaret Ekpo (1914-2006) was a Nigerian women's rights activist and social mobilizer who was a pioneering female politician in the country's First Republic and a leading member of a class of traditional Nigerian women activists, many of whom rallied women beyond notions of ethnic solidarity.

Margaret Ekpo was born in Creek Town, Cross River State, to the family of Okoroafor Obiasulor and Inyang Eyo Aniemewue. She married a doctor, John Udo Ekpo, in 1938. He was from the Ibibio ethnic group who are predominant in Akwa Ibom State, while she was of Igbo and Efik heritage. She later moved with her husband to Aba.

In 1946, she had the opportunity to study abroad at what is now Dublin Institute of Technology, Dublin Ireland. She earned a diploma in domestic science and on her return to Nigeria she established a Domestic Science and Sewing Institute in Aba.

Delta State And Its Home-Grown Billionaires

Nigerians from every nook and cranny have found Lagos an irresistible land of dreams. It is the nation’s number one destination for commerce, manufacturing, finance, and the media, and even the movie industry, which is clearly evident in the pace and pulse of the city’s activities. Apart from being Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre and its major port city, Lagos is Nigeria’s former capital city, which was responsible for the attraction of the largest percent of federal presence and attention. Living in Lagos is exciting and opportunities and possibilities for the ambitious are almost limitless – sometimes elusively so. The city also enjoys the presence of the administrative and operational head offices of the multi-national oil companies operating in the Niger Delta Region, a system which started during the Nigerian Civil War, because, according to erudite scholar, Prof. G.G. Darah, ‘the military government ordered them to relocate their administrative and operational head offices from the Niger Delta to Lagos, then Federal Capital. In compliance, Shell, Gulf Oil (now Chevron), Mobil and others moved their head offices to Lagos. This movement also shifted most businesses associated with the petroleum industry from the Niger Delta.

Top 10 Ways To Defeat Distractions

No matter how Zen you are, it can be hard to focus on the work in front of you—especially when it's something you don't want to do. Unfortunately, even a quick distraction can derail your productivity, so here are 10 tips to help you get down to business when it matters most.

10. Schedule Your Day
We all have certain hours of the day in which we get "in the zone" a little easier. Schedule your most important work for these times to give yourself the best advantage. I've also found that scheduling out my to-do scan help me stay on task, whether it's meeting a deadline or remembering to eat lunch before the clock strikes 3pm.

9. Go Full Screen
We don't multi task as well as we think we do. So, when it's time to put your nose to the grindstone, try to block out any other distractions on your screen if possible. Use a distraction-free writing tool like Q10 that goes full screen, and if you can't, at least get rid of the extra icons, windows, and other desktop clutterthat you don't need. The fewer things you have open, the more you can focus.

8. Block or Hide Distracting Web Sites and Apps
Parental controls aren't just for naughty kids—they're pretty handy for us distracted adults, too. Having trouble staying off Facebook while you're working? Remove the bookmark from your

An Hour With Africa’s Richest Man: Aliko Dangote

I’m waiting for Aliko Dangote. Everyone is. Africa’s richest man, worth $24.7 billion (more than Carl Icahn, George Soros and any number of lesser Western billionaires) is probably the most in-demand person at the World Economic Forum here in Abuja, Nigeria. He enters the Hilton on a red carpet, a mere 30 minutes late, with minders, the head of his foundation, and the second of his three grown daughters in tow. The hotel employees literally bow before him, lesser oligarchs wave and backslap, and the merely rich try to bum rides on his private plane. “I don’t know what to do, my wife really needs to get home,” says an Indian businessman to one of the numerous Dangote staffers hovering nearby, who smiles sympathetically and promises to look into things.
